Get the mulled wine ready – Jon McDevitt releases contemporary, creative Christmas single ‘Father Christmas’

Geist’s former frontman and writer, Jon McDevitt, is returning with his alternative take on a festive anthem, ‘Father Christmas’.

Out today, ‘Father Christmas’ avoids the cliché of the typical Christmas song – really making people think about its meaning and thus helping them understand what Christmas is truly about.

McDevitt’s Christmas sing-along includes thoughtful lyrics by co-writer Dominic Hudson which paint Father Christmas as a figure missing from Christmas, whilst allowing the listener to interpret it as to how or why.  An infectious melody, combined with Jon McDevitt’s harmonious vocals make for a great, catchy, Christmas single that you just cannot argue with.

Jon McDevitt has a number of local shows lined up to support the single release – you can see the full list here: http://www.jonmcdevitt.com/

What Drink?

Mulled Wine of course! Sit back, relax and get yourself in the festive spirit with the help of McDevitt’s contemporary Christmas classic.

Humor releases TLC from his latest EP

pic2Describing his hip hop heroes include the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Drake and J Cole, also taking inspiration from grime greats like Kano, Ghetts and Skepta. Starting out freestyling with friends, he has since developed his own formidable style merging speedy flows and vivid lyricism.

His new self-produced EP is a hi-octane thrill ride that blurs elements of hip hop, grime and electronica. ‘TLC’ is the lead single, which sees Humor spitting energetically over a murky backdrop of squelchy synths and punchy 808s.

Listen to TLC here:

This track is the kind of track, you would hear at a grime rave with a bottle of Grey Goose or Wray and Nephews…

Neyla Pekarek (The Lumineers)

lumineers.jpg

Neyla Pekarek from The Lumineers (Hey Ho) shared her favourite drink and it’s certainly memorable!

The drink: The Jude Law

Ingredients: Two Long Island Iced Teas (all the clear liquors in the well on ice – twice).

How to make it: Pretty easy, just drink all of it.

Why it’s great: Welcome to the jungle…

Listen to their new album “Cleopatra” on Spotify now!

In Cleopatra, The Lumineers set about trying to make musical sense of their three-year-plus roller coaster ride that was their first album. Their skill at setting a visual story to music comes through amidst the delicate, deceptively simple acoustic soundscapes. This time, though, bassist Byron Isaac provides a firm, low-end on the apocalyptic opener “Sleep on the Floor,” a ghostly tune about getting out of town before the “subways flood [and] the bridges break.” It’s a densely packed, cinematic song that echoes Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” and John Steinbeck’s East of Eden – which were models for the record alongside Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

World wide tour dates will be announced soon.

Comprised of Tim Collis on guitar and his brother Chris Collis on drums, TTNG’s lineup is completed by vocalist Henry Tremain, who also assumed bass duties after the recording of their last album, 2013’s 13.0.0.0.0. Turning their attention to the studio in late 2015, TTNG decamped to the American Midwest, ground zero for the kind of articulated alternative rock they themselves have been mastering for a decade. Recorded live to tape over 10 days at Chicago’s legendary Electrical Audio studios by Greg Norman (Mclusky, Russian Circles, Pelican, etc.), and mastered by Shellac’s Bob Weston, Disappointment Island proves that the band’s success comes from their ability to write songs whose appeal endures well after the sheer awe of their technical prowess subsides.

TTNG have created an album filled with solemn subject matter where, much like the disparity between the name and setting of Disappointment Island (a real and beautifully unspoiled locale in the Pacific Ocean), the lyrical themes stand in stark contrast to the exciting, propellant music the trio creates together. As a prime example, the album’s opening track “Coconut Crab” seamlessly showcases inventive, intricate guitar and bass lines threaded through a busy tumble of drums, all lacquered with the sweet falsetto of Tremain’s infectious vocals. These separate parts recall confessed influences such as the Kinsella brothers’ numerous projects (American Football, Make Believe, Cap’n Jazz) and a familiarity with Dischord Records groups such as Jawbox and Shudder to Think, but the way TTNG fuses these inspirations with their virtuosity results in something utterly unique. Nowhere is this interplay more evident than on the spellbinding “Consoling Ghosts”, whose rich melody soars over Tim Collis’ dynamic fingerstyle-picking. Elsewhere, the gentle harmony of “Whatever, Whenever” finally bursts into a distorted landslide of sound moments before “Bliss Quest” rolls back the intensity, only to climb with Slint-like determination, an arc triumphantly powered by Chris Collis’ inspired, rapid-fire percussion. The final track “Empty Hands” features a bass cameo from Sargent House labelmate and touring partner Henry Kohen (aka Mylets).

TTNG have existed in several incarnations and have found success in each, but their current evolution pushes what has always made the band great into new and exciting territories. Disappointment Island is TTNG’s most poignant, deliberate accomplishment, successfully arriving at a place that is simultaneously authentic and reverential.

Liberty Ship Return With New Single ‘Don’t Wish’

“We’ve heard two Liberty Ship tracks set for release early this year and they are, no word of a lie, phenomenal. Lee Mavers like phenomenal. That good.”
This Feeling / Fred Perry Subculture ‘Big in 2016’

“Liberty Ship”

  • 12 oz. Red Bull
  • 12 oz. Chilli pepper Vodka
  • 12 oz. Monster Energy Drink
  • 1 bottle Ginger Ale

Combine in highball glass and serve.

Hot on the heels of their debut single, ‘Learning to Fly’, which was playlisted on radio stations in countries around the world including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and across the USA from New York to LA, Liberty Ship are set to release their follow up single, ‘Don’t Wish’ on 8th July 2016.

Hailing from the Sheffield suburbs, which have produced some of the UK music’s most exciting bands, the four piece have already toured with the likes of King Charles (2013) and Reverend and The Makers (2014). They have played their own sold out home-town shows and were picked from over 1500 applicants to open the main stage at last year’s Tramlines Festival. They recently opened for Joe Carnall Jnr at his annual Xmas Show which featured performances from various members of Milburn, Reverend & the Makers, The Subways, The Zutons and Arctic Monkeys and were also asked to open for Milburn at their triumphant sold out four night run at O2 Academy Sheffield.

This recent succes has led to the band being invited to play some of the UK’s most prestigious festivals in the Summer of 2016, including Isle of Wight Festival, Kendall Calling and the main stage at the increasingly popular Blackthorn Festival, adding further weight to This Feeling / Fred Perry Subculture’s words, who dubbed the band as ones to watch in 2016.

Liberty Ship are producing music that demands recognition – authentic, energetic rock n roll tracks which perfectly capture the wild exuberance of youth, a band to define a generation.

The fantastic artwork for ‘Don’t Wish’ once again comes courtesy of Sheffield’s world renowned graffiti artist, illustrator and MC; Kid Acne in a continuation of the this hugely successful artistic collaboration.

“[Liberty Ship] really are on it at the moment, the new stuff we’ve had through from these lads has been PHENOMENAL!”
Christian Carlisle, BBC Introducing Sheffield

The Time Has Come for Zero Dinero – South West producer / rapper releases electrifying new EP!

For this sound we recommend 6.oz of gin garnished with fresh berries of your choosing…

Influenced by the golden era of hip hop, UK producer / rapper Zero Dinero comes through with this electrifying new EP The Time Has Come demonstrating some energetic flows, tight rhymes and some very impressive instrumentals.

Guest appearances include Kool Keith (aka Dr Octagon) and Blackalicous’s Gift of Gab, as well as famous scratch DJ, Sir BEANS OBE. The artwork and video meanwhile comes courtesy of Graham Dews (aka PARIS), the artist behind Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto cover. An impressive coup for this Swindon debutant.

Please listen to the track ‘Be and Make’ from the EP below:

https://soundcloud.com/nil-cash/be-and-make/s-EPgdg

A multi-talented musician, Zero Dinero (who’s given name is Nilkesh Mehta) handles all his own production. As well as rapping alongside hip hop legends he also plays guitar, sitar, tablas (Indian percussion), harmonium (Indian Keyboard), and has experience as a hip-hop/ funk/ reggae DJ starting out aged only 14.

Embracing his Indian roots, Zero weaves elements of Eastern philosophy into his lyricism. Some of the themes include meditation, Yoga and reading philosophy – which are uniquely presented for the first time in a Hip hop context.

The rapper’s life has been one of many challenges. Between 1999 and 2000 he travelled the world teaching English to UNICEF kids and learning Spanish fluently, something that has helped him to have such a clear outlook on life. Following a degree in International relations and Law he found himself in a corporate environment, which never sat well with him. He also recently had a serious health scare battling early Testicular Cancer.

Having overcome all this, Zero Dinero is now ready to fully pursue his true calling and has devoted himself to the career in hip hop that he always wanted. Due to his Indian background, his parents thought he should keep music strictly as a ‘hobby’ when he was younger, rather than pursue it as a ‘profession’. The Time Has Come sees him finally overcoming obstacles and following his passions.

With such endorsements from Hip hop royalty; Zero Dinero’s unique eastern influenced debut release will truly add a new dimension to both the UK and global Hip Hop scenes.

The Time Has Come is out May 21st

Prince William has his sights on the hip hop throne with new single ‘Million Ways’

Having performed at last year’s SXSW festival, Houston rapper Prince William is an exciting new hip hop underdog on the rise.

His latest single ‘Million Ways’ sees him showing off his adept flow and wordplay skills. It centres lyrically around pushing one’s talents in order to be successful.

Stream the single here on Soundcloud:

Written over a year ago, the rapper explains the inspiration behind it: ‘I was working the graveyard shift at a gas station one night (Winter ’14) and decided to play the instrumental on the loud speaker since I was the only one there. I mustve played the instrumental 100 times that night and then as I was mopping the floor, the flow and the hook just naturally hit me and I recorded it on my next off day.’

Prince William’s inspiring self-confidence and rhymes are likely to appeal to fans of artists like Jay-Z, Childish Gambino and J Cole.

A highly self-motivated artist, Prince William has started a music career through his own determination and grit, setting up his very own record label Lavish Living Ent.

He explains the source of his drive: ‘When I decided to start making music, I called lots of old friends from Elementary all the way to High school and they all (exaggerated with “all” but pretty damn close) dismissed me and that helped me develop my “self-inspiring” attitude and I also learned to depend on myself much more than the average person.’

Prince William has always seen himself as an underdog. Upon entering a contest for indie rappers in 2013 led by local hip hop legend OG Ron C, the rap icon came up on stage and said “I don’t wanna hear music about your problems, if I wanted to hear about problems I would’ve stayed home and looked at bills. This is not the rap game, I want to see girls shake their asses and music I can dance to.”

Knowing from the start that he was different to the other rappers in the competition and that this statement was subliminally aimed at him, Prince William didn’t let it get in the way of his vision, having since proved OG wrong by performing at SXSW and scoring radio airplay from Kiss FM phoenix and an interview with KTSU Houston.

He hopes to continue onwards and upwards continuing to push his own record label and garner a worldwide fanbase.

Loopexx- World Peace & A New Release

Duo Loopexx are all about promoting peace and art, a 21st century to John Lennon perhaps? Well they’re very different in sound that’s for sure! The Austrian based duo unique project melting their separate musical pasts consisting of beatboxing and rock music into a beautiful message of respect, love and tolerance, trying to drive social change.

‘Here We Are, There We Go’ is their first single, based around the current refugee crisis. While charity is certainly always needed Loopexx couldn’t have appeared on the scene at a more relevant time. With political dissatisfaction all around us this band is setting an example of hope and reminds us that good music can do so much more than just please our ears.
