The XX return with their latest single ‘On Hold’

xx

Everything you’d expect from an XX record is there: the ambient background noise, the hauntingly satisfying vocals shared between Romy and Oliver and the resonating beats that echo into some kind of atmospheric abyss.

What was missing from some of the band’s previous material was a good ‘ol build up, but ‘On Hold’ exhibits a beautifully considered one that gradually finds its way towards an original sort of rap/sample section.

The band have announced that their new album will be released in January 2017 and if it’s anything like their first two efforts then we’ll all be in for a late Christmas present.

What booze?

This is a tricky one. Say you were edgy enough to be popping this on your fancy record player and taking five for yourself, then I’d suggest a classy gin and tonic, but if the (inevitable) remix comes on in the club, you might want to swap that for a rum and ginger. A double.

‘A gorgeous debut’ Line of Best Fit

The understated delivery enhances the power of the songwriting’ Clash

‘I Found My Limit’ – https://soundcloud.com/whippedcreamrecords/blue-house-i-found-my-limit

Subtle, elliptical and ambiguous, ‘Suppose’ is the debut full-length from London based duo Blue House. Released on August 27th via Arp Cleveland (Archie Bronson Outfit) and Kristian Robinson’s (Capitol K) Whipped Cream Records (Loose Meat, Super Best Friends Club, Bas Jan,) the album presents us with a world of haunted pop — songs about people just departed, places just left, and events just witnessed. It is a world in which an under-the-surface quotidian terror might make strange all sorts of objects: PlayStation games, postcards, grasshoppers and euphoniums all find their way on to the record.

Comprised of James Howard and Ursula Russell, formerly of groups Fiction and Drop Out Venus, Blue House is a more refined affair than either of the duo’s past projects. The band in earnest probably began with a drunken duet of Patsy Cline’s ‘Walking In The Moonlight’, sang on top of a rickety table at a house party in 2015. Something of that country sensibility remains in songs like ‘Ear To The Door’, that finds Ursula and James harmonising a song about domesticity and wandering, a theme that resurfaces throughout the record (‘John the Unready / had a little baby girl last night / now he’s halfway across the countryside / saying something’s calling me.’)

’Suppose’ is rarely an obvious beast, the fragile balance of atmospherics and presence lending the record an understated and entrancing numinous-ness throughout. Leaving no stone unturned, the duo wilfully explores the intricacies of pop, with an emphasis on deft poetics and quality song writing. Whilst debut single ‘Hot Air Balloons’ brims with jangling 90’s chords, its follow up ’Simple Song’ is a delicate affair — a 70’s folk-revival lullaby, radiating with simplistic charm. The newly founded Whipped Cream’s philosophy of unifying an emerging generation of English musicians with the means to remain independently-minded makes their label a fitting home for ‘Suppose’.

The artwork continues the band’s collaboration with London based artist Phillip Reeves.

Blue House play the following dates:

Blissfields Festival, Winchester – 1st July

Dalston Victoria, London –13th July

Servant Jazz Quarters, London – 21st July

End of the Road Festival, Wiltshire – 4th September

TTNG | Announce New LP ‘DISAPPOINTMENT ISLAND’, Out July 8th via Sargent House

Oxford, UK’s TTNG (formerly known as This Town Needs Guns) officially announced their third full-length ‘Disappointment Island’ today, out July 8, 2016 on Sargent House.

I think a ice cool lager would sort you out for these guys…nothing stronger needed!
Noisey has the premiere of a new track from the album, ‘A Chase of Sorts’ alongside a lengthy interview with bassist/vocalist Henry Tremain which touches on on their recording process, their name change and the unglamorous reality of trying to make a living as a touring musician. World wide tour dates will be announced soon.

Comprised of Tim Collis on guitar and his brother Chris Collis on drums, TTNG’s lineup is completed by vocalist Henry Tremain, who also assumed bass duties after the recording of their last album, 2013’s 13.0.0.0.0. Turning their attention to the studio in late 2015, TTNG decamped to the American Midwest, ground zero for the kind of articulated alternative rock they themselves have been mastering for a decade. Recorded live to tape over 10 days at Chicago’s legendary Electrical Audio studios by Greg Norman (Mclusky, Russian Circles, Pelican, etc.), and mastered by Shellac’s Bob Weston, Disappointment Island proves that the band’s success comes from their ability to write songs whose appeal endures well after the sheer awe of their technical prowess subsides.

TTNG have created an album filled with solemn subject matter where, much like the disparity between the name and setting of Disappointment Island (a real and beautifully unspoiled locale in the Pacific Ocean), the lyrical themes stand in stark contrast to the exciting, propellant music the trio creates together. As a prime example, the album’s opening track “Coconut Crab” seamlessly showcases inventive, intricate guitar and bass lines threaded through a busy tumble of drums, all lacquered with the sweet falsetto of Tremain’s infectious vocals. These separate parts recall confessed influences such as the Kinsella brothers’ numerous projects (American Football, Make Believe, Cap’n Jazz) and a familiarity with Dischord Records groups such as Jawbox and Shudder to Think, but the way TTNG fuses these inspirations with their virtuosity results in something utterly unique. Nowhere is this interplay more evident than on the spellbinding “Consoling Ghosts”, whose rich melody soars over Tim Collis’ dynamic fingerstyle-picking. Elsewhere, the gentle harmony of “Whatever, Whenever” finally bursts into a distorted landslide of sound moments before “Bliss Quest” rolls back the intensity, only to climb with Slint-like determination, an arc triumphantly powered by Chris Collis’ inspired, rapid-fire percussion. The final track “Empty Hands” features a bass cameo from Sargent House labelmate and touring partner Henry Kohen (aka Mylets).

TTNG have existed in several incarnations and have found success in each, but their current evolution pushes what has always made the band great into new and exciting territories. Disappointment Island is TTNG’s most poignant, deliberate accomplishment, successfully arriving at a place that is simultaneously authentic and reverential.

Liberty Ship Return With New Single ‘Don’t Wish’

“We’ve heard two Liberty Ship tracks set for release early this year and they are, no word of a lie, phenomenal. Lee Mavers like phenomenal. That good.”
This Feeling / Fred Perry Subculture ‘Big in 2016’

“Liberty Ship”

  • 12 oz. Red Bull
  • 12 oz. Chilli pepper Vodka
  • 12 oz. Monster Energy Drink
  • 1 bottle Ginger Ale

Combine in highball glass and serve.

Hot on the heels of their debut single, ‘Learning to Fly’, which was playlisted on radio stations in countries around the world including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and across the USA from New York to LA, Liberty Ship are set to release their follow up single, ‘Don’t Wish’ on 8th July 2016.

Hailing from the Sheffield suburbs, which have produced some of the UK music’s most exciting bands, the four piece have already toured with the likes of King Charles (2013) and Reverend and The Makers (2014). They have played their own sold out home-town shows and were picked from over 1500 applicants to open the main stage at last year’s Tramlines Festival. They recently opened for Joe Carnall Jnr at his annual Xmas Show which featured performances from various members of Milburn, Reverend & the Makers, The Subways, The Zutons and Arctic Monkeys and were also asked to open for Milburn at their triumphant sold out four night run at O2 Academy Sheffield.

This recent succes has led to the band being invited to play some of the UK’s most prestigious festivals in the Summer of 2016, including Isle of Wight Festival, Kendall Calling and the main stage at the increasingly popular Blackthorn Festival, adding further weight to This Feeling / Fred Perry Subculture’s words, who dubbed the band as ones to watch in 2016.

Liberty Ship are producing music that demands recognition – authentic, energetic rock n roll tracks which perfectly capture the wild exuberance of youth, a band to define a generation.

The fantastic artwork for ‘Don’t Wish’ once again comes courtesy of Sheffield’s world renowned graffiti artist, illustrator and MC; Kid Acne in a continuation of the this hugely successful artistic collaboration.

“[Liberty Ship] really are on it at the moment, the new stuff we’ve had through from these lads has been PHENOMENAL!”
Christian Carlisle, BBC Introducing Sheffield

Cherry White set to precede new EP ‘Staring at the Sun’ with stylish single ‘Drifter’

Booze?

Cider!

The EP is led out of the gate by single ‘Drifter’, which will be released on June 1st, one week prior to the full EP.

Currently building a buzz with their live shows in and around London, Cherry White have now taken to the studio to record a brand new EP, ‘Staring at the Sun’. Inspired by life in London during this austerity era, surrounded by the greed of the wealthy, the tracks circle around an aspiration to reach higher and achieve their goals in the music industry and beyond.

Folding the old school songwriting smarts of Fleetwood Mac into the contemporary edge of the Raconteurs, London based four piece Cherry White are an immediately impressive proposition. Their in your face indie-blues sound is highlighted by great hooks and high energy, blending genres in a way that sets them apart from more pigeonholed bands.

Engineered at Bark Studios by the excellent Brian O’Shaughnessy (Primal Scream, The Firm, My Bloody Valentine), the EP does a fantastic job of capturing the frenetic energy of a band who thrive on a live environment.

And with the single and EP on the way, Cherry White will be working harder than ever to make sure that reputation continues to grow into the music career they deserve.

Yo ready to make you ‘Shake It’ With New Single!

Post-punk indie single set to hit on June 15th

Booze? Rum!

Currently based in New Orleans – the birthplace of soul and jazz – Yo are a rock band not afraid to go against the grain. After travelling the globe and making homes in various areas of the USA and Europe, the music and song writing draws upon a wealth of inspirations and tales from the road.

shakeit_RGB_HQ

The latest single taken from the album will be the rough hitting, punk laced track ‘Shake It’ – dripping in punchy bass-lines, quasi-spoken vocals and a distinctly trippy sensibility.

‘Shake It’ as a track represents just one of the many facets and styles that make Yo such an interesting band. Each track is specifically influenced by the place, time and events of its conception, so pinning down a genre is something of a challenge.

You can hear the track here:

Watch the video here:

The single is taken from the album ‘Vagrancy’, an LP which demonstrates perfectly the versatile nature of Yo’s song writing. Songs such as ‘Shake It’ are seemingly built for the high energy of live performance, but other tracks on the album suit different environments. Whether chilling out at a festival, going for it on a club dance floor, jumping around at a live gig or relaxing in a local pub, there will be a song on this album which fits perfectly to every situation.

Altogether, it makes for a heady cocktail which is tough to pigeonhole, sewn together by the originality of vocalist Andre’s delivery.

Single ‘Shake It’ will be available from June 15th.

A truly exciting band who have been likened to some of the shining lights of UK indie, Vida are a British four piece who are going places. Their new single is a double A-side release showing two of the different sides of the group. First, ‘Electric Lady’ tells the story of repeated overnight stays with the same girl after meeting on several nights out, and the awkwardness that follows the next morning. Meanwhile, ‘Fade Away’ speaks of a completely different kind of awkward – finding yourself in the same room as an ex…
