Alonestar’s ‘Lovelorn’

Alonestar is the musical moniker by which artist and producer, Jethro Sheeran, otherwise goes, and before you ask, yes, he is related to Ed – they’re cousins. However, this should by no means diminish Jethro’s work just because his cousin is a world-wide superstar.

In fact, upon listening to Jethro’s music, it is easy to see how Ed has been influenced by his rap style. Nonetheless, Alonestar has returned with his latest single ‘Lovelorn’, which also features the talented vocals of singer, Rosie Ribbons.

The pair wrote the track together with their past experiences and relationships in mind which provided fuel for the context of this addictive track. Combating themes of unrequited love and heartbreak, Jethro explains that ‘Lovelorn’ “is the strongest and most powerful song I have written & produced to date, it reflects my new sound and style. It’s something fresh and different to anything else out there at the moment. I dug deep to exercise the darkness in this track, and fell into the depths of my soul when coming up with the concept.”

A powerful and resonant beat underpins the whole track, adding a sense of seriousness that’s comparable to some of Eminem’s best work. Alonestar’s lyrics are fast, clever and witty, exuding attitude and emotion from every word. With his signature rap style, Jethro paves the way for the super-catchy and emotive chorus sung through the crystal clear vocals of Ribbons. There is a strong contrast between the two in terms of how they sing, but this only adds to the quality production of the track, exemplifying Jethro’s own talents.

‘Lovelorn’ was produced by Sheeran himself with the help of Massive Attack’s guitarist, Angelo Bruschini, and drummer Damon Reece.

What Drink?

You can imagine this one being played in the club so why not accompany it with a vodka and coke, or lemonade- your call!

Dex Man’s ‘Devil Ina Blue Dress’

‘Devil Ina Blue Dress’ is the latest single from London based Afro-rap artist, Dexter Sampson, otherwise known as Dex Man. The infectious new track also features the talents of J Wanza.

Dex Man could be described as a genre-hopper, navigating his way through various styles including pop, hip hop, reggaeton, drill, house and RnB, showcasing his versatility and passion across all kinds of music.

In ‘Devil Ina Blue Dress’, Dex Man employs a strong, almost steel drum-esque beat that underlies the whole track, constantly keeping the groove going. J Wanza’s intro rap makes way for a powerful drop into Dex man’s well-crafted and witty lyricism.

It’s the kind of track that would suit the club perfectly and it would undoubtedly get people up on the dance floor as a result of its catchy hooks and innately head-nodding nature.

As part of the Leftwing Movement, a democratic music group with a focus on people and motivational lyricism, creating lyrics with meaning behind them is something of paramount importance to Dex Man and this is evident within a number of his tracks such as ‘Lean On Me’, ‘Never See Us Gunnin’ and of course, ‘Devil Ina Blue Dress’.

‘Devil Ina Blue Dress’ has received an unbelievable response after being featured on Link Up TV and Hackney’s Finest where the video received over 40,000 views in under a week.

Whilst we have already mentioned Dex Man’s exploration of genres, he has taken influence from some of the urban scene heavyweights including Dr. Dre, Meek Mill, Skepta and Drake. If Dex Man can continue to produce tracks like ‘Devil Ina Blue Dress’, there’s no reason why he can’t be up there with the best in the coming future. Watch this space!

What Drink?

The hip-hop vibes at play in Dex Man’s ‘Devil Ina Blue Dress’ call for a high-class vodka, perhaps Ciroc or Grey Goose!

‘Pirate’ by Jvgg Spvrrow

Jvgg Spvrrow is a unique hip-hop artist with a wide range of influences hailing from the Caribbean island of St. Martin- hence his motto: ‘SM on Da Map’, meaning ‘St Martin To The World’.

Coming from an island like this, Jvgg has worked his way up from the streets to the studio, finding a place for his music within a genre that is difficult to gain traction in.

With a hugely distinctive pirate based style, Jvgg has created a persona for his act that differentiates him within the world of hip hop music. He has been inspired by Hip Hop artists such as Young Thug, Gucci Mane, Asap Rocky and french hip hop artists like Booba, Joey Starr and Dancehall artists like Bounty Killer, Movado and Vybz Kartel.

‘Pirate’ is Jvgg Spvrrow’s latest single, with a beat-strong hip-hop vibe that would not be out of place in the club. Clearly, Jvgg Spvrrow is ready to take St Martin to the world through the medium of his one-of-a-kind brand of music.

What Drink?

With such a gangsta-esque track on our hands here and Jvgg’s Caribbean heritage, a bottle of spiced rum would complement ‘Pirate’ perfectly. If not, shots.

New hip hop single ‘Million Ways’ by Prince William

A Million Ways artwork

‘Million ways’… what a tune. Prince William’s super strong flow over one of my favourite beats this year is like a torrent of empowering and inspirational lyricism. Dare I compare him to Drake’s alternative style of lyricism? I do. Not many rappers are striving to establish another image for rap and hip hop music and I feel that this fresh and new approach from Prince William is the tectonic shift that will grow into a tsunami of new age rappers.

The Time Has Come for Zero Dinero – South West producer / rapper releases electrifying new EP!

For this sound we recommend 6.oz of gin garnished with fresh berries of your choosing…

Influenced by the golden era of hip hop, UK producer / rapper Zero Dinero comes through with this electrifying new EP The Time Has Come demonstrating some energetic flows, tight rhymes and some very impressive instrumentals.

Guest appearances include Kool Keith (aka Dr Octagon) and Blackalicous’s Gift of Gab, as well as famous scratch DJ, Sir BEANS OBE. The artwork and video meanwhile comes courtesy of Graham Dews (aka PARIS), the artist behind Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto cover. An impressive coup for this Swindon debutant.

Please listen to the track ‘Be and Make’ from the EP below:

https://soundcloud.com/nil-cash/be-and-make/s-EPgdg

A multi-talented musician, Zero Dinero (who’s given name is Nilkesh Mehta) handles all his own production. As well as rapping alongside hip hop legends he also plays guitar, sitar, tablas (Indian percussion), harmonium (Indian Keyboard), and has experience as a hip-hop/ funk/ reggae DJ starting out aged only 14.

Embracing his Indian roots, Zero weaves elements of Eastern philosophy into his lyricism. Some of the themes include meditation, Yoga and reading philosophy – which are uniquely presented for the first time in a Hip hop context.

The rapper’s life has been one of many challenges. Between 1999 and 2000 he travelled the world teaching English to UNICEF kids and learning Spanish fluently, something that has helped him to have such a clear outlook on life. Following a degree in International relations and Law he found himself in a corporate environment, which never sat well with him. He also recently had a serious health scare battling early Testicular Cancer.

Having overcome all this, Zero Dinero is now ready to fully pursue his true calling and has devoted himself to the career in hip hop that he always wanted. Due to his Indian background, his parents thought he should keep music strictly as a ‘hobby’ when he was younger, rather than pursue it as a ‘profession’. The Time Has Come sees him finally overcoming obstacles and following his passions.

With such endorsements from Hip hop royalty; Zero Dinero’s unique eastern influenced debut release will truly add a new dimension to both the UK and global Hip Hop scenes.

The Time Has Come is out May 21st

Prince William has his sights on the hip hop throne with new single ‘Million Ways’

Having performed at last year’s SXSW festival, Houston rapper Prince William is an exciting new hip hop underdog on the rise.

His latest single ‘Million Ways’ sees him showing off his adept flow and wordplay skills. It centres lyrically around pushing one’s talents in order to be successful.

Stream the single here on Soundcloud:

Written over a year ago, the rapper explains the inspiration behind it: ‘I was working the graveyard shift at a gas station one night (Winter ’14) and decided to play the instrumental on the loud speaker since I was the only one there. I mustve played the instrumental 100 times that night and then as I was mopping the floor, the flow and the hook just naturally hit me and I recorded it on my next off day.’

Prince William’s inspiring self-confidence and rhymes are likely to appeal to fans of artists like Jay-Z, Childish Gambino and J Cole.

A highly self-motivated artist, Prince William has started a music career through his own determination and grit, setting up his very own record label Lavish Living Ent.

He explains the source of his drive: ‘When I decided to start making music, I called lots of old friends from Elementary all the way to High school and they all (exaggerated with “all” but pretty damn close) dismissed me and that helped me develop my “self-inspiring” attitude and I also learned to depend on myself much more than the average person.’

Prince William has always seen himself as an underdog. Upon entering a contest for indie rappers in 2013 led by local hip hop legend OG Ron C, the rap icon came up on stage and said “I don’t wanna hear music about your problems, if I wanted to hear about problems I would’ve stayed home and looked at bills. This is not the rap game, I want to see girls shake their asses and music I can dance to.”

Knowing from the start that he was different to the other rappers in the competition and that this statement was subliminally aimed at him, Prince William didn’t let it get in the way of his vision, having since proved OG wrong by performing at SXSW and scoring radio airplay from Kiss FM phoenix and an interview with KTSU Houston.

He hopes to continue onwards and upwards continuing to push his own record label and garner a worldwide fanbase.

Young Malak ft Cptn Morgan

Excuse my play on titles, The Keyz Star Young Malak is best served with Captain Morgan on the rocks.

Sporting some hypnotically left-field beats and a vivid introspective rapping style reminiscent of artists like Tyler, the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Flatbush Zombies and Joey Badass, Virginia Beach artist Young Malak is set to be the alternative hip hop scene’s next big star.

Released today Young Malak’s mixtape ‘The Messenger’ is an outpouring of raw emotion to a smooth beat, my personal favourite. ‘The Vortex’ has one of the most grimy sawtooth-synth beats I’ve ever had the pleasure of encountering. The visuals fit the song perfectly, you’ve got to check this out for yourself.

Darius, (Young Malak) credits The Keyz for taking him out of a dark place, and helping him to overcome his extreme writers block.  As well a music, Young Malak’s passion’s include spinning poi fire, meditating and reading spiritual books.
